Tandy's back in work after 2 years unemployed

Tandy Wakely, 22 from Bridport, left her job working in a chip shop after anxiety and depression took hold following a family bereavement.

And after being supported by family in the Midlands, she returned to the south west determined to get her life back on track and enlisted the help of our team in Dorset.

Tandy said: “I have always had bouts of anxiety and depression but when my granddad died, it got worse. I lost a lot of confidence and ended up leaving my job.

“My family and friends were brilliant, and I eventually got referred by the job centre to Working Links on the Links to Work programme.”

She was supported by health adviser Bernadette Jones and personal consultant Gina Yates who worked with Tandy to build her confidence back up again and gain the skills needed to impress potential employers.

She was also helped to tackle her anxiety, build resilience and work on coping strategies to ensure her wellbeing was as good as possible.

Tandy added: “Bernadette and Gina really helped me. Talking to Bernadette helped me to find the root of my anxiety. I got lots of tips to help me understand where it came from and how to deal with it.

“Gina helped me realise it wasn’t my fault that I was out of work and that I could do a good job. She also referred me to the Leap course where I met Alison Banks who helped me with my interview skills that I then used to get a job. Gina was always on hand to help me, even when I was on the courses.”

Within a few weeks, Tandy was pushing herself further with each appointment and undertaking different courses to help become more employable and grow her confidence.

Tandy has now started a new job working in a front of house role in a new restaurant. She added: “I was a little nervous of going back into a hospitality job but I love it. I deal with customers and help in the kitchen. I have realised I can cope with my anxiety and have a job.”

Gina said: “It’s been a real pleasure to work with Tandy and see her flourish. She has regained her spark and confidence. It’s rewarding for us as a team, to be part of her achievements.”
