Single parent back in work
"The help from Greg and other Links to Work employment consultants has been brilliant. The whole experience has made me happier and more confident in myself." – Sam Bishop, Northampton customer.
Why Sam joined the Links to Work programme
Sam hadn't worked for several years when she first joined the programme, she's a lone parent and had been busy raising her daughter. Sam was feeling a bit rusty when it came to CVs, writing applications and answering interview questions. She enlisted the support of the Links to Work programme to help pick her confidence up and get her back to scratch with all things 'job applications'.
How Links to Work helped
We referred Sam to one of our partner organisations, The Mallows Company (TMC). TMC help us deliver the Links to Work programme in and around Wellingborough, Northamptonshire. Sam was teamed up with Greg from TMC who immediately got to work building up Sam's confidence and tailoring support to help her achieve her ambitions.
Sam had previously worked in catering roles so felt she should continue working in this sector. Greg helped Sam to complete a CV which effectively showcased her relevant skills for catering but he also made sure the CV conveyed that she had picked up a number of transferable skills which would be applicable to a variety of customer facing roles. As well as making sure she had a versatile CV this helped Sam to see that she could confidentally submit realistic applications for a range of vacancies she'd been counting herself out of.
Greg worked closely with Sam to identify suitable job vacancies in the area and helped her to complete applications so that she relayed how she was suitable for each role in a clear and concise manner. Sam landed two interviews, one with the local Tesco store and the other for a kitchen assistant role with Avery Healthcare.
Sam said: "The help from Greg has been brilliant. He went so far as to rearrange an appointment at short notice to help me prepare for the interview with Tesco. We discussed the Situation Task Action Result (STAR) technique for interviews, the questions I might face and other strategies for dealing with my nerves."
Getting the job
Sam attended her interview with Tesco, she felt it went well but unfortunately was not offered the job. This knocked her confidence ahead of the interview with Avery Healthcare but Greg was on hand to help. He managed to de-escalate how she was feeling, using the months of hard work to demonstrate to Sam how far she'd come.
Sam found the confidence to attend interview and we're happy to report she excelled herself. Sam was offered the job and will be Avery Healthcare's new kitchen assistant soon.
Of the support she received, Sam said: "I think what had helped me the most was knowing that I could rely on Greg and that he would always be there to guide me. I wouldn't change a thing about the Links to Work programme."
