Links to Work supports Mark* back into work after COVID-19 caused job loss.

Why Mark joined Links to Work programme?

Mark was introduced to the ESF funded Links to Work programme by Michelle our engagement consultant. Michelle met Mark at the local Jobcentre Plus prior to COVID-19, he was interested in working in security but struggled to find any roles suitable. He did not know where to start looking and the lengthy application forms held him back.

Mark was last employed in 2019 and was eager to get back to work and have financial stability.

How Links to Work helped

Mark was soon introduced to his consultant Carly who quickly and effectively became aware of Mark’s barriers. Carly began by reviewing Mark’s CV and worked with him to create one tailored specifically for security jobs. Carly also supported Mark with writing a new covering letter, one which he could easily adapt to each application. 

Mark joined the programme with enthusiasm and confidence so Carly began looking for roles that fit his requirements as soon as his CV was ready. She enlisted the help of employment solutions consultant, Shilpa who was able to review current live vacancies to find the right one to suits his needs.

Shilpa found a role working in security at a local school and Mark was delighted to be offered an interview. Prior to the interview, Carly prepared Mark by taking him through interview techniques and commonly asked questions. Mark felt confident and well equip to attend the interview.

Getting the job

Mark was successful in his interview and offered the role - Carly and Shilpa were delighted for him.

Unfortunately, due to the pandemic and restrictions on lockdown, the schools closed a few months after Mark had started. All the shifts stopped, and they were unable to keep him on which meant Mark was once again was back on the job market.

With lockdown measures in place, Mark was unable to meet Carly in the office and he had limited internet access which meant he could not search or apply for jobs while at home. During his telephone appointments with Carly, she was able to support him by searching and completing online applications. Carly would also apply for roles that she knew fit Mark’s needs when and if she came across them during her day.

COVID-19 affected Mark’s confidence more than he realised so Carly referred him to Josie, a tutor who worked on his interview skills to give him the confidence to sit an interview again.

Mark was invited to a number of interviews and with support from Josie, he was successful in gaining a new position as a security officer within the retail sector.

Mark is delighted to have the new job and he couldn’t be happier with the support he received from the Leicester Links to Work team. We’ll continue to support Mark to make sure he’s settled in his new job
