Bobby's back in work after 20 years
"I was given load of help especially around my confidence. I had no confidence as I had not worked for such a long time." – Bobby McKee, Northampton customer.
Why Bobby joined the Links to Work programme
Bobby, 62 years old, had not been in paid employment for over 20 years. Previous health issues ended his welding career in 1997. His health issues were now under control and Bobby felt it was time to seek employment.
After such a long time out of work and concerns over how employers would react to his age, Bobby sought out the expertise of our team in Northampton.
How Links to Work helped
Bobby met Northampton Personal Consultant, Cass Pollock, who took the time to establish a good working relationship with him and develop a personalised support plan in response.
They started by producing a professional quality CV using his past work experience and the transferable skills Bobby had picked up in his personal life. Many of our customers simply don’t realise they have the skills employers are seeking. Cass used this time to show Bobby that he was more able than he thought, building his confidence in the process.
Next up, Cass identified that Bobby would benefit from improving his IT skills so she referred him to a local provider we work closely with and Bobby enrolled on an 8 week course, which he attended and passed with flying colours.
With a City and Guilds Level 3 qualification in IT and a decent CV to his name, Bobby was ready to start applying for jobs. Cass was always on hand during the application process, casting her expert eye over the forms before Bobby submitted them.
Getting the job
Bobby secured a number of interviews and successful at a number of them. He started work at the new Range store in Northampton this month. Well done, Bobby!
Cass couldn’t be more complimentary of Bobby, she said: “Bobby has shown determination and so much hard work to get to this part of his journey. He’s persevered and carried on, and it’s paid off. I’m delighted for him.”
Bobby is on a part-time contract but he's optimistic about the prospect of securing full-time hours in the future. We’re confident he’ll make it happen.
